I’ve just finished reading ‘Biology of Belief’ by Bruce Lipton and I found it totally fascinating! It allowed me to geek out in my love of biology (which was my best subject at school!) and it also strengthened beliefs that I already hold, due to the thorough research and evidence presented in the book.
Bruce Lipton is a cell biologist and also taught in medical schools in the USA and the Caribbean, where he had a huge life-changing epiphany when studying the mechanisms by which cells control their physiology and behavior. He discovered that cells are controlled by their physical and energetic environment and not their genes, which was the belief that was widely accepted at that time and any other theory, such as Bruce’s were dismissed.
He went from being a traditional ‘Newtonian’ scientist who believed in a world of matter to believing in a new biology. One of energy and the inter-connectedness of everything. I find it really interesting that a man of science, who didn’t believe in anything other than facts that could be scientifically verified, crossed over to believing in the intelligent energy behind life because he saw it for himself in our smallest of parts – our cells!
The biggest message behind the book is that your thoughts and beliefs control your destiny – more so that your genes.
“Your beliefs act like filters on a camera, changing how you see the world. And your biology adapts to those beliefs. When we truly recognize that our beliefs are that powerful, we hold the key to freedom. While we cannot readily change the codes of our genetic blueprints, we can change our minds.”
The new areas in science called Epigenetics and Quantum Physics have now proved Bruce’s theories to have be right all along. Funny how that happens quite often in science!
His explanation of how cells work makes it seem ridiculous that we could possibly think that we are NOT connected to each other and the environment. He really gives you a new perspective on things:-
“if I brought you down to the size of an individual cell so you could see your body from that perspective, it would offer a whole new view of the world. When you looked back at yourself from that perspective you would not see yourself as a single entity. You would see yourself as a bustling community of more than fifty trillion individual cells.”
Each of these individual cells is intelligent and has a simple form of consciousness, in that they respond and adapt to their environment. They can survive on their own but they have learned to co-operate with each other to form the vastly complex miracle that is your human body. Your whole body therefore is intelligent!
That’s why Yoga is so beneficial as it allows you to tap into your body’s wisdom and pay attention to it rather than being up in your head all the time. If we all learned to co-operate with each other, just like the most primitive single celled forms of life did billions of years ago, then the world would be a better place! The book does offer hope that we can and will evolve.
He also gave insights into why it’s so hard for us to make behavioural changes by sheer will power alone. It’s all down to our subconscious mind.
“the subconscious mind is a repository of stimulus-response tapes derived from instincts and learned experiences. The subconscious mind is strictly habitual; it will play the same behavioral responses to life’s signals over and over again”
Your subconscious mind wins hands down over your conscious one every time! So, it’s not because you are ‘weak’ or have ‘failed’ for repeating unhelpful patterns over and over again. It’s how you are wired. All is not lost though and as the books suggests, change your beliefs and change your whole life.
The key to making lasting change is to find your limiting beliefs and reprogram them using your subconscious mind. There are many method of doing this such as coaching, hypnosis, visualisation, CBT, NLP or EFT to name but a few!
So how did we get these limiting beliefs? Turns out it may have even been from when you were in the womb! When you were born, as a baby, your brain was in delta waves state and from the age of 2 until 6, theta. These are highly suggestible states where everything is absorbed and stored into your subconscious as truths, ready to sabotage you as an adult as they get played out again and again.
If you are working towards a big goal, always look at your beliefs first because you will keep hitting up against them, again and again. I’m currently in a coaching program myself to discover and change my limiting beliefs as they really can hold you back in every area of your life. I like to walk my talk!
Do this quick little exercise so find some of yours. Answer the following questions as quickly as you can and go with the first answer that pops into your head!
- Life is……..
- I am ………
- People are ………….
- The world is …………
- Money is …………..
- The most important thing to know about love is …………………..
The above questions will hopefully have uncovered some beliefs that you can challenge and check if they are actually yours! I’ll leave you with this last little gem:
“Survival of the Most Loving is the only ethic that will ensure not only a healthy personal life but also a healthy planet.”
