What is your purpose?

Do you feel you lack purpose in your life?

In his book ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’ by Victor E. Frankl, Victor talks about the importance of having a purpose and meaning in life. Even in the worst circumstances imaginable, you can still find a purpose.  The book is one of the most powerful ever written. Victor went through a horrific ordeal as a holocaust survivor. He barely survived his treatment in 4 different concentration camps but ultimately, it’s a story of hope and deep insights about finding meaning and resilience in life.

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing; the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” ~ Victor

Your purpose or dharma is anything you choose it to be.  You make your own purpose.  It generally does not come from some thunderbolt of knowing.  It simply comes from you reflecting deeply on certain areas of your life and making a choice to pursue something that is meaningful to you and that contributes to others in some way.  It can also take some trial and error and will usually involve you striking some things of the list and trying on another for size.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  1. What people bring meaning to my life?
  2. What events have brought meaning to my life so far?
  3. What has been the happiest period of my life so far?
  4. What are my gifts?
  5. What resource do I have at my disposal that I can use?
  6. What am I passionate about?
  7. How can I use my gifts and resources towards the things that I am passionate about?
  8. What would I do if money were no object?

All of these questions give great insight into your purpose.  You can then choose how you will use your gifts and resources towards something or for the people who are most meaningful to you.  Don’t overthink it though!  Most people overthink this and believe they need to find the ultimate answer but the truth is your purpose will never come from thinking.  It will come from doing!  It comes from your heart. It will even change through time as you change and grow.

How will you know if you are on purpose?

You will know it through your feelings.  Feelings are your ultimate GPS and will always tell you if you are on track or not.  If you feel good, you are on track.  If you feel bad, something is not right so listen to your feelings.

It’s my purpose to teach things that I am passionate about (yoga, desire map, self-love and purpose to name but a few! 🙂 I also work with people to help them live their most meaningful and purpose filled life.
